This weeks story as I reiterate is from our good friend Jay-Z, he has recently taken a break from watching the throne to create t-shirts with his clothing company Roc-a-wear (see image for shirt above) supporting the Occupy Wall Street protests. Recently his shirts looked to have been pulled from his website, but it turns out they sold out quickly but are now back in stock and ready for purchase.
“Jay-Z, as talented as he is, has the political sensibility of a hood rat and is a scrotum,” one of the protests organizers said before the shirts were removed from the site. “To attempt to profit off the first important social moment of 50 years with an overpriced piece of cotton is an insult to the fight for economic civil rights known as #occupywallstreet.”
As you can tell from the quote above some or most people are enraged by this initiative from Jay-Z to profit off of the Wall St. war. Jay-Z and his camp don’t plan on disclosing where the money will go, should they? Here we find a division, people who support the idea (such as business mogul Russell Simmons) and others who do not. However, why should we care? Personally, I think the T-shirts are a clever way of exploiting the Occupy Wall St. movement and using it as a statement that goes pretty well with the identity his music portrays and a message for others to interpret on its own. So is Jay-Z fighting for the 1% or or is it just not one of his 99 problems.
Whether good or bad he has certainly created a stir and provided awareness of the Occupy Wall St. movement even if it was for personal gain. Let YOUR voice be heard by leaving a comment on this post.
